Jon Naar: The Birth Of Graffiti
This ones for the hardcore graffiti enthusiast - Jon Naar took a series of over 3000 photos over a two week period in 1973 and has featured in the highly acclaimed book the Faith Of Graffiti. This is a talk he did about his newer book The Birth Of Graffiti and his experiences.

This is a great book. Although it must be pointed out that it is a lot more different to your standard graf books.
ReplyDeleteThere is minimal text for a start which puts your focus on the pictures. Nameless artists' work adorn the whole book and they are captured beautifully. I personally like the fact that Jon has caught the whole socio-political scene of New York in the early 1970's. "Abandoned buildings, bricks of concrete" to quote a musclebound old school hero.
Photos of the landscape in the background lend a whole immersive feel to the viewer because he has captured the spirit in which the writers did their work.
